There was a time not too long ago when you had to pound the pavement to find employment. No offence to anyone older than me, but I am so glad I was born in the 80’s and grew up as the internet was invented! Most jobs today are found by using career websites on the Internet or by networking online and in person. With that in mind, here is a list of the popular career websites for employment.

Career Website #1 – CareerBuilder

Careerbuilder.com is one of the biggest career websites on the Internet with millions of people scouring the Career Builder website looking for employment. The website has both full time and part time professional and technical jobs. Due to its popularity, large and small employers use Career Builder to post job openings and look for potential applicants. It is definitely a website that all job seekers may want to keep in mind.

Career Website #2 – Monster

Monster.com is a very large job search engine that has a database of over one million jobs. Monster has listings for jobs in all 50 states and a number of helpful resources for job applicants as well. The site makes it easy to create and upload a resume. You can use their helpful tools on topics such as preparing for an interview. Monster also enlarged its services by acquiring Yahoo Hot Jobs.

Career Website #3 – Indeed

Indeed.com is one of the largest job sites with more than 1 million new jobs added each week. It is a career website that scours the web, newspapers, and other websites to find jobs being advertised throughout the country. Indeed collects all of these jobs postings and puts them in one place. This way job applicants can search for jobs listed on multiple sites in one place instead. It is a convenient way of searching for employment.

Career Website #4 – Simply Hired

SimplyHired.com is a relatively new career website since it is only slightly more than 5 years old. Simply Hired makes it easy for job seekers to search for niche jobs that may be difficult to find on other sites. Many of the larger sites do not give applicants the ability to search for specialized jobs, so Simply Hired prides itself on helping individuals find needle in the haystack jobs that other sites overlook.

My Limited Career Website Experience

I have perused all of these sites over the last 7 years while looking for my first job and for looking for a new job when I figured out I did not want to stay in this position for the rest of my work life. I can honestly say that finding an open position is way easier than getting it. My personal experiences also lead me to say, use these websites as needed but concentrate the most on networking. In short, people hire people they like or are referred to more often than they hire off of websites.

What experiences have you had with the online career sites? Which ones can you recommend?
